Jonas Jonasson’s picaresque tale of how one person’s actions can have far-reaching?even global?consequences, written with the same light-hearted satirical voice as his bestselling debut novel,?The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared.
On June 14th, 2007, the King and Prime Minister of Sweden went missing from a gala banquet at the Royal Castle. Later it was said that both had fallen ill: the truth is different. The real story starts much earlier, in 1961, with the birth of Nombeko Mayeki in a shack in Soweto. Nombeko was fated to grow up fast and die early in her poverty-stricken township. But Nombeko takes a different path. She finds work as a housecleaner and eventually makes her way up to the position of chief advisor, at the helm of one of the world’s most secret projects.
Here is where the story merges with, then diverges from reality. South Africa developed six nuclear missiles in the 1980s, then voluntarily dismantled them in 1994. This is a story about the seventh missile . . . the one that was never supposed to have existed. Nombeko Mayeki knows too much about it, and now she’s on the run from both the South African justice and the most terrifying secret service in the world. She ends up in Sweden, which has transformed into a nuclear nation, and the fate of the world now lies in Nombeko’s hands.

An intense story ‘The Immortals of Meluha’ draws heavily from stories and legends of Hindu mythology that have been passed on from generation to generation.
First book of the trilogy, the Immortals tale unfolds in Meluha, a land that is ruled by the Suryavanshi tribe that firmly believes in the prophecy of ‘Neelkanth’ Shiva being their saviour. The Suryavanshi?s (Sun worshipers) are of the firm belief that it would be Shiva who would save them from the wrath of Chandravanshi?s (Moon worshipers).
Blending mythology and philosophy drawn from Hindu traditions, the gripping narrative moves with speed to have Shiva step up to take it upon himself about banishing evil from society.
As the tribal leader of Meluha, somewhere in Tibet, Shiva decides to help the Suryavanshi’s in their fight against the Chandravanshi, who have allied with the Nagas, a cursed tribe.
As the drama unfolds, Shiva, the tribal leader from Tibet, gets caught up between the two warring groups, where a realization dawns upon him of how his choice was affecting the war outcome as well as of aspirations of rising above the conflict and its actors begins to dominate the narrative.
The Authors has creatively woven the legend of Lord Shiva; His marriage to King Daksha’s daughter Sati is this first part of the trilogy.
‘Secret of Nagas’ and ‘Oath of the Vayuputras’ the second and third part of the same narrative take the story forward as the first part ends with Shiva charging to save Sati from being taken captive by the Naga’s.
Spread out in 415 pages, ‘The Immortals of Meluha’ was first published in 2011. After a slow start, the book soon turned a bestseller and more than two million copies have been sold. Till date it has been translated in fourteen languages.

‘A Brief History of Time: From Big Bang to Black Holes’ poses some interesting and unanswered questions, like if there had been any beginning of time or if time can run backwards or if there is any boundary to the universe itself. Stephen Hawking, the great scientist and theoretical physicist, tries to answer it all by drawing theories of the entire cosmos from Albert Einstein to Newton. In doing so, he also sheds considerable light on the dark secrets that still reside at the heart of time and space.
This book takes the readers on a journey into the depth of cosmos right from the big bang theory, through the nature of forces and the world of string theory in physics, to the different forces that constitute the universe itself, summed up as the theory of everything.
Although a seemingly huge subject, Hawking tickles the mind of the inquisitive readers through his simple yet eloquent language of physics and mathematics and has even the non-scientific reader get attracted to the enormous universe and working of the cosmos.
By drawing analogies of Copernicus, Sagan, Kepler and Einstein, among others, who unfurled the science of universe to the common people, Stephen Hawking has yet managed to bring important topics wormholes and black holes into the discussion of common people.

The Shiva Trilogy, written by Amish Tripathi, has become a nation-wide bestseller in a short time. This is due to the refreshing new plot that it explores and the unique writing style of the Authors. The Secret of The Nagas is the second novel in the saga. Amish has penned down the contents of this book in such a way that it manages to shine as a stand-alone book in itself.
The Plot and The?Characterizations
In this book, Amish describes how Shiva sets forth on a quest to destroy the Naga clan in order to avenge the death of his brother; since the common belief he has been presented with is that the Nagas are the root of all evil. The Authors takes us through a virtual tour of India as Shiva travels different lands and gathers a vast number of generic and non-generic experiences, all in the quest of saving a plagued kingdom. As he travels, he garners more friends and family and leaves a mark. Slowly, events start unfolding in such a manner that whatever beliefs the readers and Shiva too held in the previous book are tarnished. Revelations occur as the evil-doers have been showcased in a new light and the grey shades of the positive protagonists in the earlier book are exposed. The book is filled with nuanced wisdom and Shiva leaves the readers with the message that good and evil are two sides of the same coin; which is why we shouldn’t judge people. As suspense builds, the climax ends with Shiva finally entering the Naga territory making for a nail-biting finish.
About The Authors
Amish Tripathi, born on 18th November, 1974, is an Indian Authors known for writing the Shiva trilogy – The Immortals of Meluha, The Secret of The Nagas and The Oath of The Vayuputras. The snow is falling fast as he arrives, and soon all roads are closed. There’s a ‘suicide epidemic’ amongst young religious women forbidden to wear their headscarves. Islamists are poised to win the local elections and Ka is falling in love with the beautiful and radiant Ipek, now recently divorced. Amid blanketing snowfall and universal suspicion, he finds himself pursued by terrorism in a city wasting away under the shadow of Europe. In the midst of growing religious and political violence, the stage is set for a terrible and desperate act . . . Touching, slyly comic, and humming with cerebral suspense, Snow evokes the spiritual fragility of the non-Western world, its ambivalence about the godless West, and its fury. ‘A novel of profound relevance to our present moment’ The Times

Everything Susie wants appears as soon as she thinks of it – except the one thing she wants most: to be back with the people she loved on earth. Watching from her place in heaven, Susie sees her happy, suburban family devastated by her death, isolated even from one another as they each try to cope with their terrible loss alone. Over the years, her friends and siblings grow up, fall in love, do all the things she never had the chance to do herself. But life is not quite finished with Susie yet …

Based on a witty analogy between the readers desire to finish the story and the lovers desire to consummate his or her passion, If On A Winters Night A Traveller is the tale of two bemused readers whose attempts to reach the end of the same book, If On A Winters Night A Traveller by Italo Calvino, of course, are constantly and comically frustrated. In between chasing missing chapters of the book, the hapless readers tangle with an international conspiracy, a rogue translator, an elusive novelist, a disintegrating publishing house, and several oppressive governments. The result is a literary labyrinth of storylines that interrupt one another – an Arabian Nights of the postmodern age.

Assassin’s Creed: Renaissance is the first part of the Assassin’s Creed series and follows the life of Ezio Auditore da Firenze. The book starts when Ezio’s family is betrayed and murdered by the ruling family of Italy and he must exact revenge to restore the honour of his family’s name and eradicate corruption. For this, he must learn the art of the Assassins.
The story revolves around the centuries old battle between the Assassin Order and the Knights Templar. These two groups have been fighting for supremacy over each other for centuries and Ezio is drawn into this battle. During his quest for revenge, Ezio starts to train as an assassin and in the process, learns more and more truths about his family.
He then comes across the reason the two groups have been at each others throats for so long: an ancient technology that could alter the way the human mind works. He realises that there is another thing that they are after. A vault, somewhere in Italy, that contains the secrets of an ancient, technologically superior civilisation, that disappeared.
All along the way, Ezio will have to use the wisdom of great minds like Da Vinci and Niccolo Machiavelli to survive. To his friends, he is the force that will bring about a positive change and to his enemies, he is a threat to the tyrannical establishment in Italy.
Assassin’s Creed: Renaissance was published by Penguin UK in 2009 and is available in paperback.

History of Modern India is one of the famous books of Bipin Chandra. This book was published by Orient Blackswan in 2009. This book is a journey mapping the path of colonial India in from the eighteenth century to the twentieth century. It traces the timeline of British rule which majorly coincides with the modern Indian history. However, this is not a political narrative of the British rule, the freedom struggle and the Independence. Rather, this book is a social understanding of the factors that allowed British rulers to rule over India for such a long span of time. It tries to understand what the social effects of the rule were. How the small villages and corners of India was affected by a power that was controlled from Europe. What did this rule bring for the Indians to make their lives better? How did the colonized people perceived, behaved and reacted to the foreign rule? These are some of the questions famous Historian and Former JNU faculty, Late Bipin Chandra have tried to answer through his own understanding on the matter combined with oral and written references.
This book is a product of Chandra’s own research on nationalism and colonialism in India. So here you will not only find all that had happened politically, but also socio-economic aspects like what did the general people understood and did about this rule? He uses an innovative chronology; he deals with causes as well as the effects of this reign over India. While you read the book, nationalist movement certainly becomes the main storyline, but the anecdotes and parallel stories of what was going through the lives that just wanted to get by each day without any trouble are interesting. You can easily understand what and how the social hidden narratives went during that time. This is not the only accurate description of Modern Indian history, but this is much closer to the everyday reality of those who lived between 1700s-1947 in India. This book is a recommended read for the students who are preparing for civil services with “history” as an optional paper. It is also recommended for other History enthusiasts and academies.
Bipan Chandra is a renowned Authors and historian from India. Apart from this book, Chandra has written a number of other books, and they include Essays on Colonialism, The Epic Struggle, Communalism in Modern India, The Rise And Growth Of Economic Nationalism In India: Economic Policies Of Indian National Leadership, Indian National Movement: The Long Term Dynamics, and In The Name Of Democracy: The JP Movement And The Emergency. Chandra was born in Himachal Pradesh, and he completed his schooling from Forman Christian College in Lahore. He completed his degree from Stanford University, USA, and went on to earn a doctorate from the University of Delhi. For several years, Chandra served as a professor at Hindu College, Delhi. Later, he taught history at Jawaharlal Nehru University. In the year 1985, he was selected to be the General President of the Indian History Congress. He has also served as the Chairman of the National Book Trust, New Delhi. Chandra has also been a part of the University Grants Commission, New Delhi.
